Class: Study The Ancestors

Suzuki Roshi at Tassajara

Suzuki Roshi at Tassajara

We dedicate four class sessions, Oct 18 & 25, Nov 22 & 29, to our study of the Ancestors.

In this series we will immerse ourselves in information and dialog about pivotal teachers, Daiosho and Acharya, who have carried this tradition through the cultures of India to China to Japan and into our own lives and hearts. Expect to read material (sent to class members in advance) before and after each class. Students are expected to engage this material, participate actively in class and undertake study for the benefit of the whole group between classes.

The readings for our series draw from the list of books below. Please contact Gene for copies of selections from:

The First Buddhist Women, Susan Murcott
Women in Buddhism, Images of the Feminine in the Mahayana Tradition, Diana Paul
The Hidden Lamp, Caplow and Moon
Women of the Way, Tisdale
The Record of Transmitting the Light, Francis Cook
Transmission of Light, Thomas Cleary
And there will be a couple of online references, TBA

Donations and Fees

A $12-15 fee is suggested per class. Santa Cruz Zen Center relies on fees and donations to continue its mission, but nobody is ever turned away for lack of funds. If you can pay more, please consider doing so as a donation. If you cannot pay the fee listed, please pay what you can. Talk with the teacher if you have questions about fees. You are welcome to offer dana separately to the teacher. How to Donate
