This workshop is now full.

However, we are collecting names and contact information for a waiting list. Send your information to contact@sczc.org to be added to the waiting list.

Stone, glasses, masks, and ear plugs will be provided. Bring a pair of gloves.

Instructor: Longtime Santa Cruz Zen Center student, Michael Bashista, has been carving stone for 15 years. View some of his sculptures at www.bashista.com.

Friday Evening after zazen there will be an orientation to the stone carving process and the selection of your stone ( Soapstone or Alabaster). Your assignment will be to take your stone home and become acquainted.

Saturday and Sunday will be roughing out and carving. We will learning the “Direct Carving” method where you have an idea of what you will be carving but remain open to changes. Every sculpture is the result of a stone and carver “give and take”.

You are not expected to complete a sculpture. You have the option to borrow files and rasps.

Fee will be donated to Santa Cruz Zen Center after the cost of the stone is deducted.

"In the stone's stillness, there is great movement. In the sculptor's hands, there are great possibilities."
